Media on trial in Leeds

 by Mark Campey

Over 200 people from all over the country crammed into a makeshift venue in north Leeds last week to hear six key speakers talk about the way the mainstream media has become corrupt. The meeting had originally been arranged for Leeds City Museum but after an objection by ‘Leeds Friends of Syria’ (a reactionary anti-Assad group) Leeds City council banned the use of all public venues from being used to host this meeting. It was clear that those in power and the mainstream media (MSM) did not want this meeting to go ahead.
The final venue  was only announced the night the meeting took place. An Islamic centre kindly offered to host the meeting organised by Frome Stop War, an independent anti-war group that is not part of the bi-partisan Stop the War coalition.
Professor Piers Robinson of Sheffield University, who opened the discussion, posed the question of what the role of the media should be in society in terms of providing truthful and factual information rather than propaganda. He stated that there was now manipulation, lying and distortion of information with the aim of misdirection along with coercion. He highlighted the Chilcott inquiry which drew attention to the way the MSM had promoted the government’s regime change policy at the time and the recommendations he made are being blatantly ignored. He also referred to ‘Timber Sycamore’ a CIA/Saudi operation to fund ‘rebel’ groups within Syria with the aim of regime change.
Robert Stuart, an independent researcher, spoke about his investigation of the Panorama documentary ‘Saving Syria’s children’ that was first broadcast in 2013.
He uncovered irregularities in the reporting of a supposed napalm attack by the Syrian air force which led to the discovery that the filmed images of peoples’ injuries were entirely fake. Even the anti-Assad ‘Free Syrian Army’ admitted as much. One of the medical staff shown in the documentary, a Dr Ahsan, who has previously been seen with anti-Gaddafi rebels, is a member of ‘Hand in hand with Syria’ an anti-Assad group. Ahrar al-sham, a terrorist group affiliated to Al-Nusra and ISIS, actually drove the BBC journalists around Syria for the making of this programme. Naturally Robert Stuart asked the question as to whether these journalists were complicit in some of the atrocities they no doubt witnessed whilst with this group?
Professor Tim Hayward of Edinburgh University stated that we should expect the media to abide by the law. He showed a clip from C4 news which showed a girl who had gone to Syria to join the Islamic terror gangs and was encouraging others to join her. Tim was gobsmacked when he saw blatant recruitment propaganda by terrorists being broadcast on mainstream TV. The 2006 Language of Terrorism Act makes it illegal to aid or promote terrorist activity.
The ‘White Helmets’, a bogus civil defence unit that is just a front for the terrorists, is funded by US-Aid and the British government. Like many other people Prof Hayward is dismayed and very concerned about the immorality of false broadcasting taking place which is why many now eschew MSM in favour of RT and the many independent media groups sprouting up which tell the truth.
Patrick Henningson is a US journalist and broadcaster who puts out 21st Century Wire online. He mentioned how Britain used to be perceived as the gold standard of western democracy but questioned why this meeting had to be held in secret if that was true. What were they afraid of?
Patrick travelled to Syria and Iraq last year and saw first-hand the destruction wrought by the US military. He highlighted that in US presidential elections the party that garners the most votes is always the one that opposed wars and foreign intervention. This is what Trump promised, but like all others before, once in office Trump carries on the same agenda of world domination.
He talked about the way the massacre of unarmed Palestinians by Israeli troops was called ‘clashes’ by the MSM. He also mentioned the supposed launching of 20 missiles from Syria into the Golan Heights. There is no evidence to support this story.
He mentioned a news report about a Dr Nott, working at an Al-Nusra controlled hospital, who alleged that the Russians had hacked into his social media account to get a fix on his location which allowed them to drop a bunker buster bomb on the hospital. When Patrick visited the liberated hospital the building had clearly been hit by gun-fire.But it was still standing and it had not been hit by a bunker buster bomb. Just fake news like the reports of Syrian Arab Army soldiers raping women during the liberation of east Aleppo. That lie, circulated by Michael Weiss of CNN, was fed to him by the ‘Levant Front’, an affiliate of the Al-Nusra gunmen.
He noted that lots of western journalists were getting into bed with Al-Qaida and Jabat Al-Nusra and calling them ‘rebels’ when they actually are terrorists. He observed the many of the refugees were now returning to Syria in their thousands now that large areas had been liberated by the Syrian army and its allies, something the MSM didn’t want to acknowledge.
Peter Ford, a former British ambassador to Bahrain and Syria, is now a representative of the UN relief and works agency for Palestinian refugees. He is also Director of the British Syrian Society. He started by saying that the MSM was aiding and abetting warmongering using weapons of mass deception. All the events that occurred in Iraq are being copied in Syria. We have a supine media in the business of infotainment even with so-called documentaries. What happened in Raqqa is not being reported.
The role of MI5’s Andrew Parker is equally troubling. This unelected spymaster is openly telling politicians who they should be making alliances with.
The Skripal affair was all a bit suspicious given that the alleged military grade nerve agent  that poisoned them only managed to cause severe tummy troubles. But it served Parker’s anti-Russian agenda very well.
The intelligence supremo wanted to bomb Syria, under the pretext of the alleged poison gas attack, before allowing the international inspectors (OPCW) in.
It was obvious to many that it didn’t make sense for Assad to use such a weapon when the Syrian army had all but defeated the terrorists. Furthermore, the sites that were eventually  attacked by NATO had only been inspected and cleared by the OPCW a few months previously.
What is very concerning is that the NATO missile attack has set a precedent and the terrorists will be planning the next false flag for Idlib when the Syrian army pushes into that area. But the Syrians and their allies will not put up with being bombed and humiliated by NATO and its allies for much longer.
Vanessa Beeley is an investigative journalist and photographer who has reported from Egypt. Palestine and Syria, including liberated east Aleppo. John Pilger sent a message to inform the audience of his admiration for her truthful reporting of events in Syria and her expose of the White Helmets.
Vanessa informed us of the funding stream for this bogus group which has received millions from US-Aid and more recently from the British government. She has reported that the White Helmets are embedded with Al-Nusra and they only help their gunmen and provide no assistance to ordinary civilians.
The true Syrian White Helmets were set up in Syria back in the 1950s and that is the group most Syrians are familiar with – not these usurpers of the name. She was in Damascus when the last NATO missile attack took place shattering the calm that had recently been restored following the clearing of the terrorists holed up in east Ghouta who frequently shelled parts of the capital.
She mentioned how British support for the White Helmets and the so called ‘rebel’ groups is actually against UK law as they are all terrorist groups and there are severe penalties for anyone funding terrorism in Britain.
She suggested a petition be posted on the Frome Stop War website for people to sign to highlight this contradiction and take into account UN General Assembly resolution 2131 (XX) that declares that “no State shall organise, assist, foment, finance, incite or tolerate subversive, terrorist or armed activities directed towards the violent overthrow of the regime of another State, or interfere in civil strife in another State.”
The full content of the speeches at this event can be seen online on YouTube under ‘Media on trial 2018’ and I fully recommend comrades to view them before they too get banned.

Stop the Zionist witch-hunt !

KEN Livingstone’s resignation from the Labour Party and the sacking of a Hammersmith council worker for expressing pro-Palestinian views at a Jewish Voice for Labour demonstration in March are part of a vicious Zionist and Blairite campaign to drive supporters of the Palestinian cause out of the Labour Party.
Livingstone may not have been the most articulate advocate of Palestinian rights. Stan Keable, who was sacked after 17 years of unblemished service for stating his opinion of Zionists in his own time, holds cranky socialist views that have never won much support within the Labour Representation Committee or the wider labour movement in London. But none of this can possibly justify their persecution.
Years ago, when Tony Benn called Labour the “broad church” of the labour movement, all sorts of views were tolerated within it. Even now Labour officially upholds the rights of free speech and freedom of expression – which is seen by the anti-communist and anti-Arab drivel that’s spouted by the Zionists and their venal right-wing allies without censure within the Labour Party today. But these days prominent campaigners for justice for Palestine are being branded as “anti-semites” by the Blairite clique that controls Labour’s bureaucracy with the support of the right-wing bloc of Labour MPs in alliance with the Zionist movement and the blessing of the bourgeois media.
The Labour Representation Committee recently said: “those who accuse Labour Party members of antisemitism very often do so because of Corbyn’s and other left wingers’ support for the Palestinian cause. Their target is ultimately Jeremy Corbyn, a decades-long advocate of Palestinian rights. Their aim is to peel off and neutralise as many of his supporters as possible, and ultimately to go after Corbyn. Don’t forget his leadership is still under siege. In 2016 172 Labour MPs passed a vote of no confidence in him. Though his impressive show in the 2017 election made him invulnerable for the time being, they still lay low and plot what harm they can do to Corbyn and Labour”.
In 1975 the UN General Assembly classified Zionism as a form of racism and racial discrimination. In 1991 the General Assembly, under pressure from US imperialism, revoked the resolution – a condition set by Israel in return for participation in the ‘Madrid Peace Conference’ which was supposedly going to resolve the Palestinian problem. Needless to say there is still no justice for the Palestinians and Zionism is still a reactionary and racist ideology.
Zionists maintain that the “Jewish question” is “eternal,” “unique,” and beyond class considerations. Zionists utilise every means to propagandise the false idea of class peace between Jewish workers and the Jewish bourgeoisie. All forms of class struggle among Jews are proclaimed to be national treason. The Zionists have always made use of demagogy and tactical manoeuvres in their efforts to conceal the anti-popular, reactionary essence of Zionism, alleging that Zionism is the “national liberation movement of Jews throughout the world.”
Zionism’s main policy has always been one of struggle, both open and covert, against socialism, the international communist and national liberation movements, and the Soviet Union and the other socialist countries. Immediately after the victory of the October Revolution of 1917 in Russia, Zionism unleashed an active struggle against the new Soviet state. After the Second World War, amid a further intensification of the overall crisis of capitalism, the anticommunism and anti-Sovietism of international Zionism assumed still broader dimensions
Marxists have always repudiated the theory and practice of Zionism. Lenin exposed the reactionary essence of Zionism, emphasising that its dogmas are reactionary, false, and contrary to the interests of the Jewish proletariat. He criticised the Zionists’ theses concerning the unique nature of the Jewish people, the alleged absence of class differences among the Jews, and the imaginary communality of their interests, explaining that such assertions aimed to distract Jewish workersfrom the proletariat’s common class struggle. Exposing the Zionists and the Blairites is not enough. We must challenge these reactionary forces head-on throughout the labour movement.

The Insidious Intent of Val McDermid

by Ben Soton

London: Little, Brown, 2017 pp. 448. £14.99 paperback (Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series
Book 10) ISBN: 978-140870933-7

Val McDermid may be one of the best crime writers of our time.  Her novels do not follow the Agatha Christie model of being set in a closed environment where the murderer commits an outlandish crime whilst the number of suspects can be counted on one hand and the amateur sleuth catches them out making the police look incompetent. Instead McDermid’s novels are about the modern process of crime detection: involving the use of DNA and increasingly digital evidence where the field of suspects covers at least an entire country.
Insidious Intent is based around a serial killer who meets single women at weddings and murders them in horrific ways. Something of Jack the Ripper meets The Wedding Crashers.  The novel contains sub-plots involving police corruption and child sexual exploitation.  It raises the issue of how easy it is to infiltrate someone’s wedding reception.  The more intimate working-class receptions set in pubs or social clubs may be harder but not impossible to infiltrate. More lavish affairs set in expensive hotels, where wedding guests mingle with staff and other hotel guests can easily wander in, are easier to crash.
The novel is the latest of a series of stories featuring Detective Chief Inspector Carol Jordan and Tony Hill, a psychological profiler who is able to get into the mind of the killer, understanding their thought processes and working out what they might do next. The story points out that as a result of an unpleasant childhood, Hill himself could have taken the serial killer route had it not been for a twist of fate.  One of the strengths of MacDermid’s plots is that the thought processes of the killer form part of the story, thus making the killer a key character of the novel.
The novel covers the issue of the selfie in the digital age.  Today, when most of us own smart phones with a built-in camera, it is so easy to take informal pictures of friendship groups at parties or nights out. In the story selfies actually provide useful evidence, not as photos of the individuals in the intended picture but from images captured from anyone who may be in the background. Also covered is the role of the digital footprint left by our use of credit cards; which is becoming increasingly convenient since the development of the contactless payment.
This book, like many of Val MacDermid’s novels contains a strong feminist theme.  In an earlier novel Splinter of Silence, a serial killer specifically targets feminists, who he believes have ruined society and can be blamed for everything from marital breakdown to food banks.  The killer in Insidious Intent simply believes his life has been ruined by a particular woman and takes his frustration out on other unsuspecting females, who he befriends at wedding receptions.
A considerable amount of the feminist’s argument runs true.  You need only to look at real life serial killers: Peter Sutcliffe, in 1970s Yorkshire and 'Jack the Ripper' in London in 1888, both targeted vulnerable women.  In 2015 a group of feminist campaigners launched a database referred to as the Femicide Census, giving details of numbers of women killed by men.  According to the database 126 women killed through male violence in 2012, 143 in 2013 and 150 in 2014.
But the point where Marxist-Leninists depart company with feminists is that the greatest injustice todays world is still overwhelmingly one of capitalism and class exploitation.  In the case of most serial killers of women, real and fictional, the whole force of the law and the state is used against them: which is what this book is about.  The fictional serial killers of women in novels and most true to life ones are brought to justice, whilst there are of course plenty of conspiracy theories as to why “Jack the Ripper” was not caught.
Meanwhile those responsible for the installation of flammable cladding in Grenfell Tower walk the streets freely.  The likes of Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Mikhail Gorbachev (who’s obituary I look forward to reading in this paper), whose actions make those of serial killers look like an annoying hobby, were never brought to justice.  In other words, there are many injustices in this world but those committed by capitalism and imperialism trump, no pun intended, all others.
Meanwhile I for one will continue to read Ms McDermid’s books and other crime novels.  One day I may try writing one myself.  However, if I wanted to cover the worst crimes of our time I would write a history book or make a documentary.

Red Salute to Marx in China

By New Worker correspondent

NCP leader Andy Brooks took part in an international seminar titled “Marxism in the 21st Century and the Future of Socialism in the World” that was held in People’s China last week. Over 100 leaders and representatives of 75 communist parties from 50 countries from around the world met in China’s innovative hub of Shenzhen to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Karl Marx.
Forty years ago Shenzhen was just a small fishing village on the border with the then British colony of Hong Kong. Now it is a hi-tech megacity with over 12 million citizens which some believe will eventually merge with Hong Kong to form the biggest city in the world.
Over 60 Chinese communist activists and scholars also took part in the conference which opened with the Internationale on Monday 28th May. This was followed by a congratulatory message from Chinese President Xi Jinping, the leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), in which he said that the CPC was willing to have more dialogues, deepen exchanges and cooperate with various political parties and organisations in the world, including communist parties, to promote the construction of a community with a shared future for humanity and a better world.
In terms of the nature of science and truth, influence and spreading scope, there is no thought or theory that can attain the height of Marxism, nor is there a theory that has had such a tremendous impact on the world in the human history of thought, Xi said.
“Chinese communists have been persistently adapting Marxism to the times and advancing its sinicisation and popularisation, scoring a series of achievements in theoretical innovation, promoting socialism with Chinese characteristics to enter a new era, and displaying the vigour and vitality of scientific socialism in the 21st century,” Xi said.
Song Tao, head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China who opened the conference said that as China develops in the new era, it continues in the spirit of Marxism. He also said that the CPC will work and update the application of Marxism in building a shared community.
“Our ‘socialism with Chinese characteristics’ is people centred. It is a theory and a practice for the people's self-emancipation,” Song said. “It is the people who will judge whether the CPC is doing a good job, unleashing their creativity and making them the masters of the nation”.
Senior communist representatives from Cuba, the Czech Republic, Russia, South Africa and Vietnam also spoke during the opening session.
In his speech, Andy Brooks said: “In the opening words of the Communist Manifesto in 1848 Marx and Engels said ‘A spectre is haunting Europe - the spectre of communism’. That spectre is still there, despite all the twists and turns of the past 150 years. Now it haunts the entire globe because socialism is still charting the future in Asia, in Democratic Korea, People’s China, Vietnam and Laos and the Caribbean island of Cuba.
“While millions of people scrabble to earn a living just to keep a roof over their heads a tiny elite live lives beyond the reach and often beyond the imagination of most workers. Only socialism can end this. Only through socialism can the will of the masses, the overwhelming majority of the people, be carried out. Only socialism and mass democracy - not the sham democracy of the bourgeoisie or the myths of the social democrats, can end the class system and free working people from their slavery”.
