by Chris Mahin
His killing by racists shocked the conscience of America – and led to a nationwide outpouring of indignation, just as the murder of George Floyd did many years later. His murder constituted a brutal attack on freedom of the press – long before a president denounced “fake news” and cheered on physical assaults against journalists. This year, as the United States grapples with its long history of racial oppression and the ongoing efforts to muzzle the media, it’s important to honour the memory of 19th century anti-slavery journalist Elijah Lovejoy, killed 183 years ago.
At about three o’clock in the morning on November 7th 1837, the steamboat Missouri Fulton unloaded a printing press it was delivering to the Mississippi River town of Alton, Illinois. The printing press was brought into a warehouse owned by a businessman sympathetic to the fight against slavery. That printing press was supposed to produce the Alton Observer, an anti-slavery newspaper edited by Elijah Lovejoy, a 34-year-old Presbyterian minister. Soon, a drunken mob of 200 people began throwing stones. When attempts were made to set the warehouse’s roof on fire, Lovejoy emerged from inside the building in an effort to stop the burning. Five shots rang out, killing him.
The mob broke apart the printing press and threw the pieces into the Mississippi river. It was not the first time that one of Lovejoy’s presses had been destroyed. Lovejoy began his journalistic career in St Louis in the mid-1830s. There, his printing press had been demolished and his home burglarised because of his anti-slavery editorials. In May 1836, Lovejoy was forced to flee St Louis. He moved his family across the Mississippi river to the town of Alton in the free state of Illinois. There, he continued to editorialise against slavery. Pro-slavery mobs in Alton destroyed his presses several times. Each time, Lovejoy obtained a new printing press and continued to speak out against slavery.
The death of Lovejoy set off a chain of events which transformed America. Public meetings of protest were held throughout the North and Midwest. Former President John Quincy Adams described Lovejoy as America’s first martyr to freedom of the press and the freedom of the slave. Abraham Lincoln denounced the killing. The great orator Wendell Phillips launched his life-long campaign against slavery and injustice with a heartfelt speech in Boston’s Faneuil Hall condemning Lovejoy’s murder. At a meeting in Ohio, John Brown stood up, raised his hand – as if swearing an oath – and pledged to dedicate the rest of his life to the fight against slavery.
The horrific murder of Lovejoy helped people understand that slavery was wrong and that it not only destroyed the freedom of the enslaved, but also endangered the freedom of the people of the North and West as well.
Like the young activists protesting in the streets today, the abolitionists of the 19th century felt an obligation to speak out against the most horrific wrongs of their generation. In Lovejoy’s time, the 10,000 families that controlled the largest Southern plantations (and owned most of the slaves in the United States) completely dominated the political life of the country. That handful of people, a tiny percentage of the 30 million human beings then residing in the United States, were prepared to do anything necessary to maintain their political control. (They certainly showed that by killing Lovejoy.) Today, one per cent of the population of the United States controls the vast majority of the wealth and dominates the political life of the country.
Elijah Lovejoy was forced to flee the city of St Louis in May 1836. The Dred Scott case which ended with a vicious, racist US Supreme Court decision denying the humanity of African Americans was first filed in St Louis in April 1846. In November 2020, Cori Bush, an African American nurse active in the fight against police brutality, was elected to the US House of Representatives — representing St Louis. The spirit of Elijah Lovejoy and Dred Scott lives on in all those who continue the struggle for justice today and who persevere in the fight to end the domination of this country by the wealthy one per cent.

Zionism serves imperialism
Throughout its
history Zionist leaders have licked the boots of whatever capitalist Great
Power seemed to serve their interests. The tail does not wag the dog, and
Israel and the American ‘Zionist lobby’ do not dictate American foreign policy.
They serve it. They provided US imperialism with a convenient alibi to play the
role of ‘honest broker’ in the Middle East. They enable the feudal Arab oil
princes, whose thrones are propped up by imperialist bayonets, to claim that
the Arabs’ enemy is not imperialism as such but Israel and this supposedly all-powerful ‘Zionist lobby’, which pulls the strings in
the USA. The 1979 entry for Zionism in the Great Soviet Encyclopedia spells
this out in detail.
Zionism
The
most reactionary variety of Jewish bourgeois nationalism. Zionism became
widespread during the 20th century amongst the Jews in the capitalist
countries. Today it is a nationalistic ideology, represented by a ramified
system of organisations and a policy expressing the interests of the Jewish big
bourgeoisie, which is closely linked with the monopolistic bourgeoisie of the
imperialist states. Modern Zionism is militantly chauvinist, racist,
anti-communist and anti-Soviet.
Zionism emerged as a political trend in
the late 19th century. Its function was to distract the Jewish toiling masses
from the revolutionary struggle and to maintain bourgeois dominance over them.
To attain these aims, the Zionist ideologists advanced plans for solving the
‘Jewish question’ by creating a ‘Jew state’ with the aid of the great powers.
This idea was set forth in Der
Judenstaat (The Jews’ State; 1896), published by the Austrian journalist
Theodor Herzl, a Zionist ideologist. At the first Zionist Congress, held in
Basel in 1897, the World Zionist Organisation (WZO) was founded. It proclaimed
that the official goal of Zionism was to “create for the Jewish people a home
in Palestine secured by public law”.
The ideology of Zionism is highly
eclectic. It utilises many dogmas of Judaism but also includes theories of
bourgeois nationalism and social chauvinism, transformed by Zionist
ideologists. Zionist ideology maintains that the Jews in various countries
constitute an extraterritorial “single worldwide Jewish nation”. The Jews are a
“distinctive”, “unique” people, a people “chosen by god”. All peoples amongst
whom the Jews live are in one way or another anti-Semites. Anti-Semitism is a
“permanent” phenomenon and assimilation, or the merging of Jews with the
surrounding population, is “unnatural and sinful”. The Jews have “historical
rights” to the “lands of their Biblical ancestors” (Palestine and its adjoining
regions), where they must gather and build a “purely Jewish” and “egalitarian
state”.
Zionist ideologists seek to prove the
“unbreakable bond of Jews throughout the world” with Zionism, to which they
must subordinate their own interests, wherever they may be. The politicised
dogmas of Judaism state that the Jews are “chosen by god” and have a messianic
task to fulfil. These dogmas, and Judaism’s mythical thesis of the Jews’
“uniqueness”, are constituents of the extreme nationalism, chauvinism and
racism inherent in Zionist ideology and practice.
The ideologists of Zionism maintain that
the “Jewish question” is “eternal”, “unique” and beyond class considerations.
Zionists utilise every means to propagandise the false idea of class peace
between toiling Jews and the Jewish bourgeoisie (“all Jews are brothers”). All
forms of class struggle amongst Jews are proclaimed to be national treason. The
Zionists have always made use of demagogy and tactical manoeuvres in their
efforts to conceal the anti-popular, reactionary essence of Zionism, alleging
that Zionism is the “national liberation movement of Jews throughout the
world”.
After the state of Israel was formed in
1948 on part of Palestine’s territory by a resolution of the United Nations,
Zionism became Israel’s official ideology. Its main goals are to secure the
unconditional support of Israel by the world’s Jews, to gather the world’s Jews
in Israel and to inculcate a Zionist spirit amongst Jews in various countries.
Zionism seeks to expand Israel to the boundaries of the “Greater Land of
Israel”. To this end, Zionists evoke the thesis of “eternal anti-Semitism”, a
situation that they often deliberately instigate.
Zionism is the basis of Israel’s
government policy. Zionists have proclaimed the state of Israel to be the
homeland of all Jews, wherever they live and whatever their attitude towards
Zionism. The 28th World Zionist Congress, held in Jerusalem in 1972,
adopted, in violation of international law, a resolution on the collective
obligation of all national [Zionist and pro-Zionist] organisations to aid the
Jewish state under any circumstances and conditions, even if this means
opposing the respective authorities of the countries with a Jewish population.
Zionism’s main
policy has always been one of struggle, both open and covert, against
socialism, the international communist and national liberation movements, and
the Soviet Union and other socialist countries. Immediately after the victory
of the October Revolution of 1917 in Russia, Zionism unleashed an active
struggle against the new Soviet state. After the Second World War (1939–45),
amidst a further intensification of the overall crisis of capitalism, the
anti-communism and anti-Sovietism of international Zionism assumed still
broader dimensions. The shift in the alignment of forces in the world in favour
of socialism, the successful resolution of the national question (including the
Jewish question) in the USSR, and the Soviet Union’s consistent support of the
national liberation struggle of the Arab peoples, have given rise to
intensified anti-Soviet and anti-communist Zionist propaganda and activity.
International Zionism strives to undermine
the moral and political unity of the peoples of the socialist countries, and to
prevent citizens of Jewish nationality from participation in building socialism
and communism. Zionism seeks to subvert the relaxation of international tension
and in particular the incipient normalisation of Soviet–American relations. As
a shock detachment of imperialism, colonialism and neo-colonialism,
international Zionism opposes the national liberation movement of the peoples
of Africa, Asia and Latin America.
In the Near East, the Zionist ruling
circles of Israel conduct a policy of aggression and of continuous territorial
expansion at the expense of the Arab peoples, particularly the Arab people of
Palestine. This policy made Israel an imperialist gendarme in the Near East and
was the main cause of the Arab–Israeli military conflicts of 1948–49, 1956,
1967 and 1973. Zionism became one of imperialism’s chief allies in its global
struggle against the world liberation movement.
Zionism’s ideological concepts and political
plans are implemented by a far-flung, highly centralised system of Zionist and
pro-Zionist organisations, directed by centres in the USA and Israel. The
administrating and co-ordinating centre of international Zionism – the WZO
system – is the Jewish Agency for Israel. The Jewish Agency deals mainly with
the immigration of Jews into Israel and acts as the representative of the WZO
to the Israeli government. The World Zionist Congress is the de jure highest
body of the WZO, which is directed by a group of leaders with close ties to
certain imperialist circles in the USA. The executive committee of the WZO has
two branches, one in New York and one in Jerusalem.
The WZO directs and controls Zionist
organisations in more than 60 capitalist countries. The largest are the Women’s
International Zionist Organisation, the World Confederation of United Zionists,
the World Labour Zionist Movement, and the Zionist Organization of America. The
formally non-Zionist World Jewish Congress (founded 1936), with organisations
in 67 capitalist countries, is under the de facto control of the WZO.
Directly or indirectly affiliated with these major organisations are a
multitude of local Zionist and pro-Zionist organisations, societies and
committees, which constitute a unified system of international Zionism. The WZO
possesses large financial resources, mainly contributed by Jewish monopolists;
some funds are collected by levying substantial dues, which are sometimes
compulsory, on the Jewish population.
Many means of mass information are
controlled or influenced by Zionist organisations, including many publishing
houses and radio, television and film companies in the USA, Western Europe,
Latin America, Africa and Australia. International Zionism has always included
a variety of ideological currents, political factions and groups: Zionist
socialists, political Zionists, spiritual Zionists, religious Zionists, general
Zionists and revisionist Zionists (today’s fascist Herut Party and kindred
groups). This variety merely reflects the interests of different strata of the
Jewish bourgeoisie and does not alter but only masks Zionism’s basically
imperialist nature.
Essentially, the differences amongst the
various orientations of Zionism do not go beyond disputes over tactics and
often reflect the struggle within the Zionist elite for positions of influence.
Marxists have always repudiated the theory
and practice of Zionism. VI Lenin revealed the reactionary essence of Zionism,
emphasising that its dogmas are reactionary, false and contrary to the
interests of the Jewish proletariat. He criticised the Zionists’ theses
concerning the unique nature of the Jewish people, the alleged absence of class
differences amongst the Jews and the imaginary communality of their interests,
explaining that such assertions aimed to distract the Jewish toiling masses
from the proletariat’s common class struggle.
The international communist movement
denounces the anti-popular, reactionary character of Zionism and Zionist
activity in all countries. The document adopted by the International Conference
of Communist and Workers’ Parties in 1969 appealed for “the launching of the
broadest movement of protest … against racial and national discrimination,
Zionism, and anti-Semitism, which are incited by capitalist reactionary forces
and exploited by them to disorient the masses politically”.
A consistent struggle against Zionism is
waged in particular by the Communist Party of Israel (CPI). The CPI proves
convincingly that Zionism has always been exploited by the forces of extreme
reaction and imperialism, and that the ideology and practices of Zionism are
contrary to the interests of Jewish toilers throughout the world and the
national interests of the people of Israel. The CPI has shown that the struggle
against Zionism is a vital necessity for the people of Israel and for all
progressive forces. Denouncing the allegedly classless approach of the Zionists
to the ‘Jewish question’ the CPI proves that this question can be resolved only
with the victory of democracy and socialism, as evidenced by the experience of
the USSR and the other socialist countries. The CPI advocates the brotherhood
and friendship of the toilers of all countries, and opposes the anti-Soviet
slanderous propaganda and subversive activity of the Zionist leaders and rulers
of Israel.
As the overall crisis of capitalism
intensifies, the crisis of Zionist ideology and the untenability of all its
concepts become increasingly obvious: the overwhelming majority of Jews reject
Zionist dogmas. With rare exceptions, the Jewish population of the USSR, like
all the peoples of the Soviet Union and the world’s progressive forces,
resolutely condemns the aggressive political course of the Zionist ruling
clique of Israel. The 30th session of the United Nations General Assembly
(November 1975) classified Zionism as a form of racism and racial
discrimination.
The natural and objective process of the
assimilation of the Jews is gaining strength throughout the world. In the
Jewish communities of the countries of the West and amongst the population of
Israel there is an increasing comprehension that the Zionist policies of
Israel’s ruling circles may lead the population of Israel to a real national
catastrophe.

Standing up to racism
Downcast
racists left London with their tails tucked firmly between their legs last
weekend following a poorly supported march through the capital that came under
a barrage of abuse from anti-fascists all along the way. The ‘football lads’
had bragged that tens of thousands would join them to march from the West End
to a rally outside Downing Street – but on the day barely a thousand
degenerates turned up, easily outnumbered by several thousand anti-fascists who
responded to the call to defend our streets.
Supporters of the RMT rail union and other
militant unions together with the long-established Stand Up To Racism and Unite
Against Fascism movements opposed them in a number of counter-protests,
including a robust response from the newly-formed ‘Football Lads Against
Fascism’ (FLAF)
that is building a progressive alternative to the recent far-right revival
amongst football fans in Britain.
In a message to the anti-fascist
campaigners, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, and Diane Abbott, the shadow home
secretary, who helped to organise the event, said: “Congratulations on today’s
demonstration standing up against racism and far-right extremism.
“We’re in solidarity with all those around
the world standing up to oppose racism and to support the diversity of our
communities. We’re proud to walk in the traditions of anti-racism campaigners
and activists. Your fight is our fight.”
The racists and fascists are on the march
again, and communists must be in the forefront of the resistance. There is no
substitute for blocking their path with massive numbers, even if the police do
not like this.
So it goes without saying that on the
streets and facing the fascists there must be maximum unity between
anti-fascists of all political shades. We must remember that the biggest and
most successful anti-fascist alliance of all time was led by Stalin, Churchill
and Roosevelt, and that they managed to work together despite having very
little else in common, until the threat of Nazism was smashed. If they can work
with each other then we can also work with everyone on the left and anyone else
ready to stand up to racism and fascism.
As communists, working with other
anti-fascists of all kinds also gives opportunities for friendly dialogue as we
stand shoulder-to-shoulder against fascism, and it in no way implies our
support for the political views on other matters of the people we are standing
next to. Those are matters for peaceful argument during the lulls in fighting
the fascists. This is the only way to achieve the mass turn-outs necessary to
stop the fascists. And it happens naturally on the streets. Anti-fascists of
all shades will defend one another regardless where there is a threat of attack
by fascists or by police.
The traditional tactics of the mainstream
anti-racist movements and the more robust tactics of those up for confronting
the fascists on their own terms are both needed, and should be co-ordinated for
maximum effect.
Communists are great ones for meetings,
conferences, debates and committees – theoretical work that is usually done
sitting down. This is all essential work but it is only half the struggle. If
all those great resolutions and clarifications of the line are just left
hanging we might as well not bother. We must stand up, get out and about, and
be at the forefront of implementation – on the streets, in the workplaces, in
the communities, on the housing estates, putting our line into practice and
communicating directly with workers, and raising levels of political awareness
and class consciousness.
We must ensure that the hardship and
suffering caused by the austerity regime and attacks on working-class living
standards turn into anger and not into despair and resignation. To do that we
need some successes in struggle, we need to set at first modest, achievable
goals to build morale and awareness. Defeating fascist and racist activity is a
crucial starting point.

Drive the racists off the streets
Reports
that former English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson has applied to join
UKIP is causing ripples amongst what’s left of that Eurosceptic party. Even
Nigel Farage seems dismayed at the prospect of someone once seen as the leader
of a bunch of racist thugs joining the party he once led.
Robinson, whose real name is Stephen
Yaxley-Lennon, thinks “the British working class will be electrified” if he
joins UKIP. But Robinson is a vain man with an inflated view of his own
importance and UKIP counts for little these days.
Sir Oswald Mosley, the leader of the
British Union of Fascists in the 1930s, much later said that his subsequent
heirs were “dwarves standing on the shoulders of giants” who were presumably
Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler. Mosley seldom got anything right after he
left the second pre-war Labour Government but he was, on this occasion,
spot on.
Robinson’s followers largely consist of
the ageing racists in the two rival “football lads” movements that having been
marching through unwelcoming streets to hurl abuse at Muslims, and everyone
else they hate, during the summer break in the football season. These drunken
thugs are not Hitler’s legions nor Mosley’s Blackshirts. They cause misery
through the trouble they stir wherever they go and their antics can incite
random violence against ethnic minorities. But Robinson is not the Duce and the
rabble who follow him are not going to March on London anytime now.
The ‘Football Lads’ are very loosely
organised former football hooligans and veteran neo-Nazis. Their main
agenda is to engage in street fighting and they will pick on any likely target.
When they fail to find one, they fight each other. This has totally sabotaged
efforts by their leaders to claim they are not racist.
They pose no threat to the state but they
do terrorise minority communities, and give police and local authorities
justification for rigid social control measures that affect all political
activists.
We shouldn’t, of course, ignore the growth
of right-wing extremism. The Ukraine government is controlled by fascist
movements that extol war-time Nazi collaborators, and the success of the
mis-named Swedish Democrat party in the country’s recent general election and
the growth of other far-right parties across the rest of the European Union has
sent alarm bells across the continent.
Whilst the Blairite and Zionist fifth
column within the labour movement carry on with their bogus ‘anti-Semitism’
campaign there is a crying need for a new mass movement to drive the racists
off the streets.
Communists must support all the existing
anti-racist and anti-fascist movements, as well as taking up John McDonnell’s
call for the relaunch of the Anti-Nazi League in response to Islamophobia and
the recent upsurge in hate crimes across the country.
Jeremy Corbyn’s number two said: “It’s
time for an Anti-Nazi League-type cultural and political campaign to resist”
because “we can no longer ignore the rise of far-right politics in our
society.”
The ruling class is not inherently racist,
but it has always used racism to divide and weaken the working class. When any
worker suffers abuse or discrimination because of their race, religion, gender,
sexuality or for any other reason, the class as a whole is weakened, and it is
the responsibility of the whole class to combat racism and all other divisions
of the class.
This is why the New Communist Party does
not support separate organisation for workers of different colour, religion or
gender. The class must stand united on the basis that an injury to one is an
injury to all.
